Hong Kong’s court of appeal has ruled that a British lesbian who moved to the territory with her spouse should be granted a dependent visa.

The visa, typically given to the spouses and wives of foreigners working in Hong Kong, was repudiated because she was not considered a spouse, the status of women said.

Same-sex marriage is banned in the territory although discrimination based on sexual direction is illegal.

Campaigners say this is a landmark speciman who are able to lead to greater equality.

The woman, who has been identified as QT, entered into a civil partnership in England in 2011 after more than seven years with her partner.
